Studying in the UK is one of the most popular routes for ambitious students from Ghana, Nigeria, and across West Africa — and it remains a strong option in 2026. But the application process has a lot of moving parts, and small mistakes (a missing bank statement, a translated document without the right wording) can push your start date back by a whole term. Here's how the journey actually works.

Step 1: Pick the right course and institution

Your university choice determines almost everything else — visa eligibility, course fees, accommodation cost, and (if you want to work in the UK afterwards) your Graduate visa options. Look for a 'licensed student sponsor' on the Home Office register. Studying with anyone outside that list means you cannot get a Student visa.

Step 2: Get a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)

After you accept an offer and meet all conditions, the institution issues a CAS — a unique reference number that contains your course fees, expected start date, and personal details. You must apply for your visa within 6 months of receiving your CAS.

Step 3: Meet the financial requirement

This is where most refusals happen. The Home Office wants to see that you can pay for your course and live in the UK without working illegally. For 2026 applicants you must show:

  • Course fees for your first academic year (or remaining fees if you've already paid some — your CAS will list both)
  • Living costs: £1,171 per month if studying outside London, £1,529 per month inside London, capped at 9 months
  • Funds held in any personal bank or building society account for at least 28 consecutive days, ending no more than 31 days before you apply
  • If you're using a parent's or partner's account, you'll need consent letters and proof of relationship

Step 4: Apply and attend biometrics

You apply online and attend a biometric appointment at a VAC (Visa Application Centre). Standard processing is usually 3 weeks from the biometrics date, but priority and super-priority services are available if your start date is tight.

Step 5: Pre-departure planning

Confirmed your visa? Start sorting accommodation, your travel itinerary, and your arrival paperwork. Most universities expect you to attend an induction in the first week of term — plan to arrive at least a few days before that so you can settle in.

How long does the whole journey take?

From your first university enquiry to landing in the UK, plan for 6-12 months. Most students underestimate the time between offer and CAS — universities take a few weeks to issue CAS even after conditions are met. Apply early.
